Warning: Email regarding alleged copyright infringement notice misusing the name of Milbank LLP

Emails have been sent purporting to be from Milbank LLP on behalf of Night Agency in relation to a supposed 'Notice of Intellectual Property Rights Violation'.

What is the scam?

The SRA has been informed that emails have been sent to at least two recipients purporting to be from a genuine firm of solicitors (see below) in relation to a supposed 'Legal Notice Regarding Intellectual Property Infringement' which alleges that the receiver has violated reproduction, distribution, and public communication rights owned Night Agency. The email also provides a link to supposed evidence documentation regarding the infringement; however, this may contain malware if opened.

The email seen was sent using the following email address of 'noreply@appsheet.com'. The email references a postal address of '11 Westfield Road, London'. 

Any business or transactions through the email address 'noreply@appsheet.com' are not undertaken by any individual or firm authorised and regulated by the SRA.

Is there a genuine firm or person?

The SRA authorises and regulates a genuine firm of solicitors called Milbank LLP (SRA ID 78722. The firm’s address is 100 Liverpool Street, London, EC2M 2AT, the email domain for the firm is @milbank.com and the contact number for the firm is 02076153000.

Milbank LLP has confirmed it does not have any connection to the email above.

What should I do?

When a firm's or individual's identity has been copied exactly (or cloned), due diligence is necessary. If you receive correspondence claiming to be from the above firm(s) or individual(s), or information of a similar nature to that described, you should conduct your own due diligence by checking the authenticity of the correspondence by contacting the law firm directly by reliable and established means. You can contact the SRA to find out if individuals or firms are regulated and authorised by the SRA and verify an individual's or firm's practising details. Other verification methods, such as checking public records (e.g. telephone directories and company records) may be required in other circumstances.
