Document appearing as a declaration misusing the name, and details of Midland Law and the name and SRA number of Shuhel Hussain.

What is the scam?

The SRA has seen a document misusing the name, and details of a genuine firm of solicitors and the name and SRA number of a genuine solicitor (see below).

The document lists the genuine solicitor as an 'Solicitor/Commissioner of Oaths' and purports to have been sworn, attested and executed before or by the genuine solicitor.

The document seen by the SRA bears stamps which appear to misuse the firm's name and details, including its address, email address and telephone number, together with the genuine solicitor's name and SRA number. However, the stamps are unclear, and the SRA is unable to confirm their precise contents.

Any business or transaction through this document as described above is not undertaken by a firm or individual authorised and regulated by the SRA.

Is there a genuine firm or person?

The SRA authorises and regulates a genuine firm of solicitors called Midland Law which is a trading name for Aylah Ltd (SRA ID 826104). The genuine address of the firm's head office is Midland Law, West Midlands House, Gipsy Lane, Willenhall, WV13 2HA and the genuine telephone numbers are 01902 275058, 07856 956 947 and 07514 345 601. The genuine email domain of the firm is @midlandlaw.co.uk.

The SRA authorises and regulates a genuine solicitor called Shuhel Hussain who is a director at the firm Midland Law. The SRA number for the genuine solicitor is 609350.

The genuine firm have confirmed that the genuine solicitor, and the firm do not have any connection to the correspondence, email addresses and telephone number referred to in the above alert.

What should I do?

When a firm's or individual's identity has been copied exactly (or cloned), due diligence is necessary. If you receive correspondence claiming to be from the above firm(s) or individual(s), or information of a similar nature to that described, you should conduct your own due diligence by checking the authenticity of the correspondence by contacting the law firm directly by reliable and established means. You can contact the SRA to find out if individuals or firms are regulated and authorised by the SRA and verify an individual's or firm's practising details. Other verification methods, such as checking public records (e.g. telephone directories and company records) may be required in other circumstances.
