Warning: Correspondence claiming to be from Simon Burn of 'Simon Burn Legal Chambers'

Correspondence misusing the name of Simon Burn purporting to be from 'Simon Burn Legal Chambers' regarding a legal stamping fee.

What is the scam?

The SRA has seen a letter sent to a member of the public purporting to be from a genuine solicitor (see details below). The letter relates to a 'review of an investment account'.

The letter claims that a compliance and stamping fee of £1400 needs to be paid.

The letter uses the genuine firm address of 51 Promenade, Cheltenham, GL50 1PJ.

The letter was sent by email from the email address 'trademarkinvestment1565@gmail.com'.

The SRA does not authorise or regulate a firm of solicitors called 'Simon Burn Legal Chambers'.

Any business or transactions through the letter or email address described above is not undertaken by a firm or individual authorised and regulated by the SRA.

Is there a genuine firm or person?

The SRA authorises and regulates a genuine solicitor by the name of Simon Leonard Burn (SRA number 37635). Simon Leonard Burn is the director of the genuine firm Simon Burn Solicitors Limited (SRA number 516917). The genuine firm uses the email domain @simonburn.com.

Simon Leonard Burn has confirmed that neither he nor his firm has any connection with the letter or email shown in the above alert.

What should I do?

When a firm's or individual's identity has been copied exactly (or cloned), due diligence is necessary. If you receive correspondence claiming to be from the above firm(s) or individual(s), or information of a similar nature to that described, you should conduct your own due diligence by checking the authenticity of the correspondence by contacting the law firm directly by reliable and established means. You can contact the SRA to find out if individuals or firms are regulated and authorised by the SRA and verify an individual's or firm's practising details. Other verification methods, such as checking public records (e.g. telephone directories and company records) may be required in other circumstances.
