Emails have been sent misusing the name of Maneer Ghani and Highfields Solicitors in relation to supposedly locating potential beneficiaries for an estate matter.
What is the scam?
Emails have been sent misusing the name of a genuine solicitor at a genuine firm (see below for details of the genuine firm and individual) in relation to supposedly locating potential beneficiaries for an estate matter.
The emails were sent from the email address 'hfsolicitors.maneer.ghani@protonmail.com'. The emails also provide a postal address of 33 Devonshire Street, Keighley, BD21 2BH (see below).
Any business or transaction through the email address 'hfsolicitors.maneer.ghani@protonmail.com' is not undertaken by a firm or individual authorised and regulated by the SRA.
Is there a genuine firm or person?
The SRA authorises and regulates a genuine firm of solicitors called Highfields Solicitors (SRA ID 496898). The genuine firm uses the email domain @highfields-solicitors.co.uk. The genuine firm's head office is Aequitas House, 33 Devonshire Street, Keighley, BD21 2BH and their genuine telephone number is 01535 608111.
The SRA authorises and regulates a genuine solicitor called Maneer Ghani (SRA ID 474123) who is employed at Highfields Solicitors and his genuine email addresses are maneer.ghani@highfieldssolicitors.co.uk and info@highfieldssolicitors.co.uk.
The genuine firm and the genuine solicitor have confirmed that they have no connection to the emails referred to in the alert above.
What should I do?
When a firm's or individual's identity has been copied exactly (or cloned), due diligence is necessary. If you receive correspondence claiming to be from the above firm(s) or individual(s), or information of a similar nature to that described, you should conduct your own due diligence by checking the authenticity of the correspondence by contacting the law firm directly by reliable and established means. You can contact the SRA to find out if individuals or firms are regulated and authorised by the SRA and verify an individual's or firm's practising details. Other verification methods, such as checking public records (e.g. telephone directories and company records) may be required in other circumstances.
